For years, "going out to eat in Cane Bay" meant one intersection. You drove to The Market at Cane Bay, parked near Publix at 1724 State Rd, and picked from the storefronts wrapped around it. That was the neighborhood's food scene, full stop. Anything else meant a drive up 176 or out toward Nexton.

That's quietly changed this year. There are now two distinct commercial nodes inside Cane Bay Plantation, and thanks to the community's paved trail system running under Cane Bay Boulevard, you can move between them without ever getting in a car or crossing the boulevard at grade. If you live here and still think of dinner as a drive, you're using a map that's about eighteen months out of date.

The two nodes, side by side

Cane Bay's commercial footprint used to be one address. Now it's two, with genuinely different characters.

The older node is anchored by groceries, which shapes everything else about it. The 45,600 square foot Publix pulls foot traffic that supports sit-down places like Rio Chico and a Famulari's location. The North Creek build-out is a different animal. No grocery, no high school across the street, no fifteen-year run-in of loyal weeknight regulars. It's a fast-casual cluster built for the people who moved into Cane Bay after 2020.

What actually opened at 124 North Creek Dr

The most-asked-about opening this summer was CAVA. Before doors opened to the public, the location ran a Community Day on Sunday, June 28, 2026, from 10:30 AM to 8:00 PM at 124 North Creek Dr, Unit C. Registered guests ate free, and donations at checkout were matched up to $1,000 for the Lowcountry Food Bank. If you saw the line and assumed it was a stunt, it wasn't. That's how CAVA opens most new stores, and the food bank match was the real point.

Two things to know if you haven't been yet. The lunch rush is heaviest around 12:15, which is roughly ten minutes after the closest office parks release for lunch. And the parking lot pattern in North Creek funnels traffic differently from The Market, so if you're used to the Publix approach, take the entrance one block further north.

The tunnels are the whole point

Here's the piece most residents miss. Cane Bay's paved multi-use trail system does not stop at Cane Bay Boulevard. It goes under it.

Held on the community paved trail system, this flat course is perfect for beginners, experts, and even walkers, and strollers. The Course: Your Run/Walk will begin at Cane Bay Elementary School parking lot and use the paved multi-use trails to loop thru 2 tunnels for the 3.1 miles course.

That's the GO Race description of the First Day 5K, held January 1 in Cane Bay, which uses two tunnels running under Cane Bay Blvd and stretches out along the new Nexton Parkway Extension. What matters for daily life isn't the race. It's the tunnels. If you live on the older Publix side of the boulevard, the trail lets you get to the North Creek side without merging into car traffic. If you live on the North Creek side, the same trail gets you to Publix, to the YMCA, and to the Cane Bay High School side without ever having to cross four lanes.

The trail is not a bike path in the recreational sense. It's shortcut infrastructure that happens to be paved and shaded. Once you start thinking of it that way, dinner logistics change.

A Saturday loop that uses both nodes

Here's a walkable order for a weekend that treats both nodes as one neighborhood, not two:

1. Start at the Cane Bay Family YMCA at 1655 Cane Bay Blvd for a morning class or a swim in the 25-yard pool. Park once.
2. Take the trail south through the first tunnel toward The Market at Cane Bay.
3. Grocery run at Publix. Drop the cold stuff back at the car if you drove, or push on if you're on foot with a small bag.
4. Coffee or an early lunch at one of the sit-down spots at The Market. Rio Chico is at the Market at Cane Bay location with the Mexican menu locals have anchored their weeknights around for years, and Famulari's Cane Bay is the same brand that was named Charleston City Paper Best of Charleston Best Pizza in 2026.
5. Loop back through the second tunnel to the North Creek side.
6. Late-afternoon bowl at CAVA at 124 North Creek Dr.
7. Trail back to the YMCA parking lot.

You did not cross Cane Bay Blvd at grade once. That's not incidental. Anyone who has tried to make a left onto the boulevard between 4:30 and 6:00 on a weekday knows exactly what those tunnels are worth.

The Chick-fil-A most people forget is technically ours

Cane Bay's Chick-fil-A sits at 1726 State Road, in the Cane Bay Shopping Center, open 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It has been here since 2022, so it doesn't feel new anymore, but it's worth flagging because it's the fast-food outlier in a neighborhood otherwise built around casual sit-down and grocery.

The operator, Nadia Matson, has called Summerville home for four years, which shows up in the school-night traffic pattern. If you're picking up between 5:15 and 6:30 on a weeknight, the drive-through line at this location routinely wraps the building. The trick most residents figure out eventually is that mobile ordering plus curbside is faster than the drive-through by a wide margin at that hour. The line looks bad. The wait, if you've ordered ahead, isn't.

The YMCA amenity most residents underuse

The Cane Bay Family YMCA opened April 27, 2019, as a 54,000-square-foot facility with a 25-yard swimming pool, full basketball court, jogging track, wellness center, indoor multipurpose spaces, tennis courts, and a library. That last item is the one people miss.

The 5,000-square-foot library inside is a full-service branch and the first collaboration of its kind between a county library and a YMCA in the United States. First in the country. It's inside the building you already have a membership to, and Berkeley County residents don't need that membership to use it. Story time for kids, holds pickup, printing, the works. If you've been driving out to a different branch, you've been driving past this one.

Why the two-node structure matters for how you live here

Cane Bay is not a small development. The community sits on over 4,500 acres, and it's ranked the #12 top-selling master-planned community in the nation by RCLCO in 2024. At that scale, a single commercial node was always going to feel undersized. The North Creek build-out isn't a competitor to The Market. It's a second front door, positioned closer to the newer subsections that grew up on the far side of the boulevard.

If you moved in before 2018, your mental map probably still centers on Publix. That's fine, but you're missing half the food options within a mile of your driveway. If you moved in after 2022, your mental map probably centers on North Creek and skips Publix. You're missing the older, quieter restaurants that have been feeding the neighborhood for a decade. The trail exists so you don't have to pick a side.

The events already using this infrastructure

The First Day 5K is the most visible example. The 2026 race ran Thursday, January 1, as a 5K Run/Walk with a virtual option, and the course used the tunnels precisely because it let a few hundred runners loop safely without shutting down Cane Bay Blvd. Expect to see more community events use the same trick, from charity walks to school-sponsored fun runs. If you have kids in the Berkeley County schools, this is the year to start noticing which events post their routes on the community trail system versus the sidewalks along the boulevard. The trail versions are the ones you can join on short notice without moving your car.
